Panta rhei everything flows

Dutch artist Eelke van Willegen (1974) creates art of great simplicity. Artless, natural, still and without further ado. The artist is a surfer. Surfing is fun. But surfing is also about reaching an inner tranquillity. Reading the wave. Knowing the water. The flight, a perfect union of body, water, wind and sky. Tasting the salt scum on your lips. Surfing, plain and simple.
But appearances may be deceiving; on closer inspection his work proves to be complex and carefully thought-out. Form is guided by action. Like the ocean-floor moulds the wave and shapes it according to the tides.
Eelke captures the visible world in either a simple drawing or a three-dimensional work of art. Powerful essentials. Neither easily accomplished, nor easily spot.
The viewer will have to read the work, like the surfer reads the water. But, for anyone who takes the trouble to look carefully, there will be much to see. It’s as simple as that.


Panta rhei alles stroomt

Eelke van Willegen (1974) maakt werk van grote eenvoud. Ongekunsteld, natuurlijk, zonder vertoon en stil. De kunstenaar is een surfer. Surfen is leuk. Maar surfen is ook stil worden. Het lezen van de golf. Waterwijsheid. De volmaakte vlucht van het lichaam tussen water, wind en hemel. Zout schuim op je lippen. Eenvoudig surfen.
Maar schijn bedriegt; bij nadere beschouwing zijn de werken van Eelke complex en weloverwogen. De vorm wordt gestuurd door de handeling. Zoals de golf zich voegt naar de zeebodem. Zoals een breker rolt met het getij. De zichtbare wereld brengt Eelke terug tot een eenvoudige tekening of een ruimtelijk werk. Krachtige hoofdlijnen. Geen gemakkelijke opgave. Dat maakt het voor de toeschouwer evenmin gemakkelijk. De kijker zal het werk moeten ’lezen’. Zoals de surfer de zee. Maar wie goed kijkt, zal ook veel te zien krijgen. Zo eenvoudig is dat. Niet simpel, maar zeer krachtig. En de zee, de zee…

Not easy, yet very forceful. And the sea, the sea…
